a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition has confirmed its importance in immune support. Children in Nepal given zinc supplements were protected from a serious bacterium that can cause respiratory infections, including pneumonia.

The connection between zinc & infection

Streptococcus pneumoniae-related pneumonia is one of the most serious health threats to children around the world. As part of a larger study, researchers looked at the effects of micronutrient supplements on the health of children in Nepal, an area known for its high prevalence of nutrient deficiencies.

Children between one and three years old were randomly assigned to receive 10 mg of zinc per day or placebo. From these two groups, 550 children who developed pneumonia during the study period were compared with 550 children who did not. Swabs of nasal secretions from the children were tested for the presence of S. pneumoniae. As predicted, carriers of the bacterium were nearly three times more likely to get pneumonia than noncarriers, and among children who had early signs of infection at the time of the nasal swab, carriers were 78 times more likely to develop pneumonia. However, among children in the zinc group, carriers had no greater risk of pneumonia than noncarriers.

“We found evidence that zinc supplementation may significantly weaken the association between S. pneumoniae carriage and acute lower respiratory infection in young children living in areas of endemic zinc deficiency,” the study’s authors said.

...While only 3% of US children have low blood zinc levels, this study highlights the clear connection between adequate nutrition and health....

3% is all you need... so has any US medical team studied the people who get pneumococcal disease to see if they are zinc deficient?

Zinc deficiency is not uncommon! And it's quick & easy to test for with a liquid zinc supplement

Yes, but if you kids have adequate zinc, they will never take the test ever again :D

Very true :giggle:

Is it true that too much zinc can set off the balance of other minerals as well? And how much is too much?

Interesting if a simple zinc supplement could remove the risk of PD. All the sudden the need for a vaccine would disappear.

Guess we'll never see zinc benefits being publicly broadcast then.:eyeroll:

Yes, the balance of zinc and copper are intertwined. I was going to start a thread on Minerals at some point, where all that would go in. If your levels of zinc are low, your levels of copper can be high...

Nutrition is very complicated, and I prefer to get as much as possible from food, because there are factors in food that we just don't understand, but because in NZ our soils are so depleted in selenium, boron and magnesium, there are some things that need careful attention... like getting enough brazil nuts into you, and concentrating on magnesium rich foods... however, the way my biochemistry works, I need more magnesium than I can get from food.

I'm a hard-wired A personality, and most of them are chronically magnesium deficient...

Though recent reseach shows that 70% of the population is Mag deficient. Which figures, because people who are mag deficient will be other nutrient deficient have have all sorts of problems like osteoporosis, and heart disease.

Thread drift.

I will get to do that that thread sometime :D

I hope you do that mineral thread soon Hilary!!

It's info like this that makes me want to run out and give my son a zinc supplement. He is unvaccinated and PD (along with HIB) are the two things that scare me the most. All the other VPD's instill less fear for me. Anyway I certainly don't want to go dosing him up and creating mineral imbalances, but I would like to be able to do something to help protect him from PD. Any thoughts??

Yeah :D. Take a rolling pin, and ding ever so lightly, at least 12 times, on your frontal lobotomy :D.

Any mother who breastfeeds her babies, and feeds them properly with adequate minerals through lots of fruit and veges, keeps the grains to a minumum, and is able to access unpasteurised milk and cheese is half way there. The other half is plenty of sun, exercise, sleep, love and only drink decent water. None of that chlorinated flouridated, aluminium saturated stuff that comes out of the kitchen tap... :D

Honestly.. your child's body is designed to do the right job, so long as it has the right fuel and maintenance done on it... if you've done all that, you have to trust his body...., laugh, smell the daisies, but as insurance continue learning so that if he looks a bit peely, then you have an idea what to do...
