View Full Version : Post Nasal Drip
Looking for any tips, remedies, for getting rid of, what I understand, is a post nasal drip. For the past 3 months I have the constant need to swallow, and have what feels like thick mucus 'behind' my nose at the back of my throat. It is driving me nuts. I comes and goes in severity. If I have a bad nights sleep it seems to be back with avengeance the next day. I have tried gargling with salt water, putting salt water up my nose. I do not eat dairy or wheat. Have now cut out soy, and have stopped eating rye bread as I know that this is an immune system response to something, I just can't seem to figure out what. I read that spicy foods, pepper etc can irritate it. I love spicy food and have always eaten more garlic, onion, cayenne when I am feeling run down, should I cut these out too? :cry2: I take up to 2000mg of vit c a day, and taking a zinc/magnesium/b12 combination and calcium. I wear earplugs alot at night, as my DH is a chronic snorer, wonder whether this is causing the problem? As I also seem to have become sensitive to high altitude, my ears seem to take a lot longer to clear and can hurt. My sinuses are clear, and I can breath easily through my nose. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
For me, it's been environmental allergies and taming those has been a slow, slow process. Mine have been around since I was about 12 or 13-ish, and I'm 35 now, so it's taking longer to see an impact vs other more recent health issues.
You may want to switch to a sublingual B12, it seems to absorb better, and you may want to consider a folate supplement (preferably real folate instead of folic acid). Those weren't enough for me, but they were involved. Allergies seem to be related, in part, to methylation issues, and B12 and folate are two of the important players there, plus sufficient dietary methionine.
I think some people have good results with either a quercetin supp (if it's allergies) or stinging nettles capsules (not nettles as an infusion), but those need to be taken several times a day.
Personally, I've often needed more than 2,000 mg of vitC a day, you could experiment with that.
The part about your ears feeling odd, maybe some visits to someone who does cranial-sacral would help?

Do you also have a sort of a lump when you swallow, like there is a small stone lodged in the flesh in your throat?
Kind of. It feels high up my throat though, more like above my Uvula (??spelling). Also wondered whether my neck glands were swollen, which was making me feel like I needed to swallow all the time. Thought you were having some 'timeout' MT ? Can't keep away huh :-)

I drop in. Just don't want expectations of me at the moment. I do need time out.
Yeah, the lump when swallowing would will be behind just where the top of the neck starts out to become the underneath of the chin. Every swallow would feel like a little stone is in the way.
Thyroglossal cyst? Is the mucus it coming from the skin high up at the back of the nose, or from the base of the back of the tongue? Sometimes a thyroglossal cyst causes infection up the back of the throat because of what is coming out of the cyst itself.
I've had one all my life - they're an embryonic remnant- , but in 1997 it got infected, and I was swallowing mucus all the time, and couldn't work out where it was coming from. They did an ultrasound, and found a t-shaped black hole, then dropped a camera down there, and watched the mucus coming out. Of course, they wanted to treat it heavy duty, and then remove it, (Could write a book about all that!!! ) neither of which I allowed. the operation is heavy duty, and I didnt' want a bar of it.
I treated it myself. I still have a thyroglossal cyst, but it's not caused any more issues.
