Hi,

I just wanted to have a rant (if that's okay) and make contact with some intelligent human beings!!! Glad to find this website. A GP told me today that he would not want my two unvaccinated children going to the same school as his children, making them sick! I couldn't believe he said this to me! I only asked him what his thoughts were on vaccinating.... he immediately told me in a dismissive tone "it's not debatable", then proceeded to tell me my 'unvaccinated children' would be unwelcome in his children's school. In the same breath he acknowledged the whooping cough vaccine had to be changed from whole cell to acellular... not addressing of course the reasons why it had to be changed (due to so many side effects of course). I am a mother to an 18 year old, a 2 year old and a two month old. My oldest was vaccinated (because that's what I was told to do and there was little opportunity for 'checking' or investigating), my youngest two are not vaccinated and already I am growing tired of the illogical argument and the rude attitude I receive when I state my position. The attitude is absurd.... they believe an unvaccinated child is unhealthy and full of disease???? I believe it is the other way around, I believe vaccinated children are the ones I want my healthy children to avoid....especially around the times the children are immunised. I was never comfortable with the way my oldest boy reacted to vaccines but my concerns were always dismissed, and the current mountain of evidence and countless parent testimonies has left my husband and I to question the efficacy and safety of vaccinations, so we have opted to not vaccinate at all. Mind you, the number of vaccinations required for my 18 year old when he was growing up, is I believe a fraction of what children are exposed to today. My two little children, in particular my little 2 year old boy, is the brightest and healthiest child I know. I can't help but compare.... when my oldest boy was his age.... soon after the 12 month MMR shot, he went from a happy, bright and quite engaged little baby to a child who could not focus and concentrate as he should've been able to. He disappeared after that 12 month shot, and he struggled for the rest of his years at school with learning and behavioural problems. He still struggles. No arrogant doctor is going to scare me enough to vaccinate my incredibly healthy and bright little 2 year old or my beautiful and very healthy 2 month old daughter! It's a dreadful feeling, watching your once engaged little baby, suddenly disappear, eyes no longer engaged and their brightness deteriorating... and you can't explain why and no one wants to acknowledge your concerns. In saying that though, the government is currently doing all they can to scare parents by putting forward whooping cough statistics.

Anyway, I'm sorry, it really is a rant, I hope I get some intelligent replies! To add insult to injury of course, I had to sit patiently while this doctor insulted my intelligence, then pay for it! What a disgrace and I'm tired of it already (and my children aren't even at school yet!!!) Goodness, what am I in for when they attend school???! And how do I make sure my children don't get caught up at school having to line up in front of the demountable with government staff providing routine free immunisations for all? All of this worries me. Any advice would be great!

Oh, and apologies for the 'angry face' on my post. It was kind of a mistake, I didn't mean to include it! my little 2 month old daughter has had a bit of colic, so I'm not getting much sleep lately.... a smiley face might have been better!

What's a GP? (not quite awake yet :) ) I'd ask whoever it was though, if their kids are vaccinated, what are they concerned about-the vaccine not working to protect their child? What if your child could not receive a vaccine, what then-I suppose you would then fall into the category of him complaining that everyone needed to vaccinate to protect your child-but you would no longer be at fault.

Sorry to hear about your eldest, and welcome to the board.

Welcome to the club!

I think we've all endured this type of treatment from someone on our lives in regards to our choices to forgo vaccines...doesn't matter where you are from. Im assuming you are not from the USA.

PP GP means general practitioner. This term is used in most other places in the world (besides the US). We of course have the PCP!

fully sympathise with you.

Since it's obvious he's going to fire you, I'd pay for another visis, and swipe straight back at him:, "So why did you vaccinate your children if you think they could get the disease, and die from it, by being in contact with unvaccinated children?"

Then I'd have continued, "You done any overseas medical volunteer work? Did you feel that the vaccines they lined you up before you went, would leave you unprotected from the unvaccinated masses you're treating?"

If he was still a silent stunned mullet, I would have finished by saying, "You know Doctor, if your attitude about such a simple issue is so illogical, I have to wonder whether or not I can actually trust either your observation or analysis skills. You may feel we are not the patients for you, but your thinking inabilities tell me that you're a danger to the whole community."

The most efficient answer to the problem is to homeschool. Problem is that that means you have to be able to live on one income.

Welcome Molly!

I wholeheartedly agree with you and if it weren't for this site I would think the world was completely crazy.

Are you from Australia?

Hi Molly,
I wish I could say that its easy to grow calluses --around our belief systems.. but that probably depends on personality..
I was taught that one must have a small portion of arrogance- (an exact amount was actually quoted to me from some holy book- forgot the exact amount! :)
So there you go, grow some arrogance! You know what you're doing! Unfortunately it is sometimes easy to get annoyed... but with a little arrogance, one need never become hurt or worried- (is this sounding super weird?)
Good Luck in dealing with impolite pple!

Sounds like you need a new doctor...well, he's probably written you off anyway, so no love lost there.

We have a GP that we see very rarely for stuff that we can't deal with on our own. He's in his late 50s and his kids have had a number of the "childhood diseases" so he doesn't give me any stick about not vaccinating...he signed our CO forms. He does wish we'd reconsider on the DT vax, but he doesn't push it.

Compare that with one we saw at a walk-in clinic when our two year old had a respiratory infection that resulted in severe choking episodes (we'd already been through pertussis with him and I knew the symptoms were different, so it wasn't even on the radar...later when it happened again we clued in that the choking and vomiting was his response to the mucus build up from nasty URIs). Anyway, the other doctor gave us no end of grief about his vax status and then said he was writing a letter to our GP to urge him to insist we vaccinate (ha). I thought the funniest part was when the walk-in doc stood in front of me and adopted this serious, grim expression and said, "Well, I have to inform you that you'll not be able to enrol him in school anywhere in this state until he gets vaccinated."

I said, "Really? My daughter has been enrolled in three schools now without having had a single vaccine." :nana:

I hope you can find someone else who is willing to work with your family...and welcome...

ETA: the school and vaccine thing...it's a concern here too but then by the time they're that age, hopefully they'll have a handle on what is okay and what is not. My daughter knows that no one is to give her a needle. We've discussed this a number of times...she's supposed to remind them, "My parents said no, please phone them." Usually schools are so particular about consent that you'll get a heads up when they start a campaign. The last school sent around info and a consent form, which I never signed. So, no consent form, no shots...unless they want to deal with a legal suit down the road.
