Hi, I live in the lower north island with hubby and my children ds (5.5) and dd (3.5). I met Hilary back in 2003 when I was researching vaccinations (ds was 6mths old and not vaccinated at that stage) and spent a lot of time devouring her posts and learnt a lot about nutrition and it's importance on the immune system and general health.

I have always had a natural living aspect about myself, but it's only really become more so since having kids. My first real eco decision was to cloth nappy my kids and it's just grown from there. These days I seem to make more on the fringe lifestyle choices and feel a bit of a :alien: (although less so now that I've found half a dozen fellow natural living, homeschooling, gardening mama's as a wonderful support group).

A friend spoke to me when I was pregnant with ds about becoming informed about vaccinating and it took me till he was 6wks old and due for his first jab to make my final decision not to and we haven't looked back. A few years prior to having children I started using homeopathy and that is our main means of treating illness. I have been fortunate to find a GP (several actually) who support our non-vax, not medicating fevers and trying out natural remedies before using ABs (which we haven't had to use to date).

More about me. I took a leap last year and started up a permaculture style garden and have discovered that I love it, love the connection to the earth, love the sense of achievement and love the peace that I find while gardening. After reading another post here - I think it's a sign of getting old (all 36yrs lol). Other signs of age seem to be discovering crochet, wanting to knit, learning traditional skills such as making cheese, butter and jam (mostly as just once off interests to "know how"). And although it's not official yet, we are homeschooling the kids in a "natural learning" style. I've been blogging our journey towards a simple life and that too has become an enjoyable passtime.

Today our homeschooling group gathered at my house and we had a solar cook up using homemade cookers - took about 3hrs to cook our food, but we had a lovely tasty meal at the end!

Over summer we plan on getting away camping a few times (including the organic River Festival which is quickly becoming an annual thing for us).

Nice to meet you all and thanks Hilary for inviting me along.:D

A solar cook-up with your own cookers sounds fantastic! What did you end up cooking?

Hi Nikki.

Nice to meet you. Homeschooling sounds great. I tried for 2 weeks and then sent my DD to school. I still love the concept and I think if I ever moved back to the mainland I would homeschool. One thing about the school here is there are only 14 students and they get to do a lot of very cool things. It like schooling in an extended family almost.

Anyway looking forward to getting to know you.

Ah that island school sounds neat 3monkeys!

Ah, I have thought of you every now and then and missed you lots.

I remember someone saying you had stopped posting. :(

You were Miss "No Poo" yeah? hehe.

Do you still get vege boxes from Chantal?

Wonder-Full

Aww fanks.

Yep I'm the no 'poo girl lol. Still do and it's coming up 2yrs in a few weeks time.

Yes, still get the vege boxes. Glad I stuck with it over winter/spring when things were a bit lame, but really enjoying the variety again.

Anyway, back later.

I cooked up some rice noodles and made a pasta sauce. Turned out great, probably could have cooked the noodles less, but they were a hit anyway. There was also a chickpea curry, asparagus', rosehip tea, blackbean sauce for on top of nacho chips covered with cheese and a yummy fresh salad that a friend had made including some wild weeds.

Would love to hear more about your permaculture garden. Well, it's work in progress, but I read Lynda Woodrow's book on Home Permaculture Garden and took it from there. We use the chooks to scratch up, weed and fertilize the soil and then plant into it.

Sounds like a nice set up. I guess it would also be difficult to choose to HS when you have such a small community as well?

Yeah, it was. Just because you are not seen to be supporting the community. And because I dont take my children to the preschool I am already on the outer somewhat!!!!!!!!!

You should start a thread for "no poo" on the living for a better world thread. I am a very infrequent "poo" er (I assume we are talking shampoo, :) ) and would love to learn more about no poo.

I only just figured out what "no poo" was in reference to. And here I was thinking you must have some serious constipation problem :LMAO:

Love your new avatar Nikki.

LOL, and i'd have a real problem since I'm coming up two years without poo hehe. OK, will start up a thread tonight. Crikey, here I am trying to get away from the computer and now there's a new board here to entertain me.

Thanks for the avatar MT!

Everyone should know that their avatars are solely in lieu of their own choices. Just want people to feel at home, but don't want to tread on toes.

Hi Nikki!

I am scratching my head - I know I just read a blog somewhere about a home-school group cooking with solar ovens! LOL. Then you mention playcentre, and I think I know who you are... maybe.

Anyway. You mention playcentre and I cry inside, oh how I miss it!
