I just did a search on this, and found some information on the Australian Homebirth Association.

every woman who has ever had a home birth has to get into action on this one.

It is a shocking state of affairs.

MT- not only every woman who has had a homebirth, but EVERY WOMAN!! This is a serious women's rights issue. How is it that a woman can chose to have an elective caesarean without a medical reason, but if a woman wants to experience an unhindered birth with a midwife she can be fined $30,000. The midwife is also fined the same amount but can also receive a gaol sentence.

EVERY WOMAN has to get up and say NO based on the rights of women to CHOOSE where, when and with whom she wants to give birth.

There is a National Protest outside Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 7th Sept. All women should attend- if not for themselves, then for the rights of their daughters to choose

The problem as I see it, deesalie, is that most women who chose hospital, believe that women who homebirth are negligent, just as most women who chose to vaccinate, belive that parents who don't, are child abusers....

That's why I laid the responsibility with women who homebirth. If others join them, that's a bonus.

do you have some succinct links to point to the key issues?

There's lots of discussions around this issue at Joyous Birth http://joyousbirth.info/forums/index.php

I understand that most women won't understand the issue at hand, but if we can shift the view away from "dangerous homebirth" (which we know it's not) to "women having the ability to choose" then perhaps, just perhaps, we might be able to reach a few more :)

The Hoydens blog has a great post on the issue as well.

Homebirth to become illegal in a year. (http://viv.id.au/blog/20090625.5487/homebirth-to-become-illegal-in-a-year/)

I'll be in Canberra on the 7th. There's no way I will stand by and let the government dictate what I can and can't do with my own body.

Here are the details for the rally for those who can make it

HOME - EVERY WOMAN’S BIRTH RIGHT – RALLY FOR HOMEBIRTH – MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7 2009, PARLIAMENT HOUSE CANBERRA

Homebirth Australia is hosting a MAJOR rally in Canberra (outside Parliament House) on Monday September 7 from 11.30am.

There has been much discussion about the potential outlawing of homebirth and the continued lack of equity for women choosing homebirth.

We need this to be BIG. When I met with the federal department of Health they commented on the huge number of submissions (900 of which over half came from homebirth consumers). Sadly I said if you outlaw homebirth I will lead 9000 angry women and babies to Canberra!

Now 9000 may be a tall order but we need thousands.

For all the women and midwives that have contacted and said this issue matters please put it in your diary.

There is lots to organise and we look forward to many providing ideas and support.

The states close to Canberra will be called on to provide as many as possible to attend.

It would be great to have at least a few from every state and territory.

Please forward this meeting far and wide.

Details will soon be on the HBA website.

If I lived in Australia I would be at that rally. Its just plain WRONG what they are doing there. Not much gets me riled up. Well Dog control, birthing issues and vaccinations. I have been reading about it on JB and I hope everyone who wants to maintain their rights goes to that rally. I wonder if they will ever try and do that here.

Yes Quickenings sig is BRILLIANT
